Intellectual Property and the Content Control Industry

Copyright is a form of Intellectual Property that protects the original expression of ideas. It enables creators to manage how their content is used.

With social media, a lot of content is remediated and reproduced through individuals interpretations. These content creators have to be informed and understanding of the laws surrounding copyright and the major impacts of of infringement of these laws that can lead to legal implications.

In 2018, singer Lana Del Rey had claimed Radiohead had filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against her over similarities in her song “Get Free” and the Rock band’s 1992 “Creep” classic. Del Rey had proposed to Radiohead an offer up to 40% of the royalties but they were only accepting of 100%. When the band had been questioned about this, they denied any claims. By March 2018 Del Rey had confirmed the dispute had been settled.
